January 9th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Podcasts and written by Jay Ru

vol24We’ve set the bar pretty high for our first mix of ‘09, Dj Mayhem came to recognition as  co-host of The Next Level Hip Hop Show on Jazz fm in Dublin. He then entered the 1999 Irish DMC where he placed second in what was his First Live performance. Many more competitions followed, and in total Dj Mayhem placed Runner up in 4 DMC’s, 1 ITF and 1 DTF. He then represented Ireland at the 2002 & 2003 Battle for World Supremacy Finals in the Brixton Academy London.
Aswell as Battling others Dj’s, Mayhem would also make regular apperences in Eamonn Dorans, The Kitchen , Capital Bar, The Village, Music Center, Crawdaddy, The Pod, Rira and other venues across Ireland spinning HipHop, Soul, Jazz and Funk all mixed together with a splash of Turntablism.
During this time Mayhem got together with Messiah j and The Expert to form Creative Control and in 2001 they released their debut single “Bloodrush” followed by “Check the Vision” on  Volta Records. Both Singles would later feature on Messiah j and the Experts Debut album “Whats confusing you” in 2003.
After supporting Hip Hop artists  such as The Pharcyde, Jurassic 5, Canibus, Supernatural, Roots Manuva,  Dj Qbert, Scratch Perverts, Tigerstyles, Dj Plusone, Dj Cash Money and others. 2004 saw Dj Mayhem enter the studio to team up once again withThe Next Level crew to release. I was delighted and proud to be asked to do a mix for this series, and what I thought I’d like to do was to try to make a mix that didn’t sound like my last one. My last mix (see my blog) was fairly standard in terms of its programming so with this one I tried to be a bit different. It starts off rather furiously before dropping back into hip hop and gathering pace from there ’till the end via a few favourites, misfits and, I hope, surprises. I’m pretty happy with it, but as always with mixes after listening to and practising them as many times as you do it’s harder to know whether they’re a good listen or not so I would love to hear your comments/kudos/criticisms.

Cheers, Higo.

Now for the news

First up i received an email a few days ago that i feel i should share with as many hip hop fans out there that i can. It seems that Ma Dukes (Mrs Yancey) (J.Dilla’s mom) needs our help. Details below…..

ATTENTION…. TO ALL HIP HOP BLOGS AND SUPPORTERS OF MADUKES

DONATE TODAY

Maureen Yancey gave birth to one of the greatest producers of our generation, James Yancey aka Dilla. She suffers from Lupus, the same disease which claimed the life of her child. Lupus is an auto-immune disease which results in cell and tissue damage and a host of related medical issues.

Mrs. Yancey is currently struggling to pay for her own medical bills and to keep her household running after the loss of one of her children. She reached out to us in an attempt to contact the fans that were supporters of her son & his music. Please consider donating to her today.

Please note: this is NOT a tax-deductible donation, and this is in no way related to the Dilla Foundation or the estate of James Yancey. There are no administration fees related to your donation. You will be donating directly to Mrs. Yancey.

Thank you!
