Pure Unisex Clothing & Footwear Waterford Presents

Yes folks we’re back at ya quicker than “Pookie” went back to that glass pipe! So far we’ve had the smooth soulful mix from Jay Ru, the eclectic stylings of Justin O Donnell and most recently u where treated to a sick podcast from the “crowd pleaser, lady teaser, nipple squeezer” otherwise known as Handsome Paddy. Now at podcast 4 we have none other than Limerick’s 45 King “A2Df” taking us thru one hell of a funky journey! Hold on………………..

this mix is just a throw together of recent records which he has been bumpin at his nights, all originals all 45s ,it start off deep ends up with some boogie music ,hope you like it” – A2DF

Trinity Room resident (Limerick) & all round funkateer ‘A2DF’ steps up
to the plates for Vol. 4 of the ‘Chop Shop’. Make sure your shoes are
well ’souled’ for this outing as it’s sure to have you cutting some
serious rug. Gigs with acts such as ‘Arrested Development, Mad
Professor, Breakestra & over 6 years experience have earned this guy
great respect on the scene & this mix is sure to enhance his
reputation even further. Add to this the fact that he’s now taking it
over-seas with gigs in Warsaw for starters.

If you like your funk, soul & rare groove a little deeper then this
one is for you. This collection is perfectly suited to a low key party
or in its original home in ‘Dolans Warehouse’ (Limerick). It serves
not merely as background music but fuses together the type of tracks
that you can switch in & out of quite easily, dance or simply just
sway to. The sound quality is gritty which is to be expected as all
the material comes from original 45’s, every smack, crackle & pop,
resulting in a warmer listening experience. Don’t expect too much on a
technical level here either aside for use of some echo effects & one
incidence of ‘double copying’ on ‘Onaje’s’ sublime ‘I Will Be Your DJ’
there’s even a pause after one of the tracks which I found a little
odd but this particular style or DJ’ng for that matter isn’t about
skill it’s about selection & this is where the DJ’s strongest suite
lies. Expect the rarest of grooves & salivation from fellow soul heads
at the track listing.

Ok so down to the nitty gritty there’s so much I could go into in
terms of the artists featured here so I’ll just focus on personal
highlights. On the roll call are revered artists such as ‘Syl
Johnson’, ‘Charles Wright’ & ‘Lynn Collins’ so the mention of those
names alone should help to clarify what we’re dealing with here. This
pod cast takes in some early deep soul tracks progressing somewhat
chronologically up to early 80’s boogie music. Standout tracks for me
include ‘Funky Grandpa’ by ‘The Incomparable 7′ a raw & amusing number
& a welcome addition. The ‘positive funk’ of ‘Party’ by ‘Clarence
Reid’ also features with an arrangement very reminiscent of ‘Isaac
Hayes’ tour de force ‘Shaft’.

Always great too to hear ‘Fireflys’ bass smackingly good ‘Love is
gonna be on your side’ pumping through the speakers. Released during
the bridging period between rare groove & early house & tentatively
titled ‘Street’ music this is an absolute gem. This is followed in
quick succession my ‘Gino Soccio’s’ masterful ‘Try it out’ another
perfect example of this period & easily one of the finest rare groove
records ever produced. A slick effect later heralds the entrance of
the undisputed ‘Queen of Rare Groove’ Gwen McCrae with her finest
moment ‘All This Love that I’m giving’ a track that I’d be confident
most people would have an affinity for. The same too can be applied to
‘All The Peoples’ grinding ‘Cramp Your Style’ which returns the mix to
it’s original jump off point. Honourable mention goes to one of the
most bizarre cuts I’ve ever heard ‘The Devils’ creepy ‘Xorcists’ a
strange brew of funk, prog rock guitars, Vincent Pricesque vocals, &
frogs!!!!

So if you’re tired of the same tried & tested compilations wheeling
out the same song selections then check this for further listening if
only to appreciate that a lot of these tracks were the foundations for
much of contemporary music.
