Stevie G presents The Chop Shop Podcast Vol.9

December 14th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Podcasts and written by Jay Ru

First of let me wish all you a Happy Christmas and a Good New Year. While i’m wishing folks well i’d like to thank all the dj’s who took the time to put a mix for the podcast, so to Justin O Donnell, Handsome Paddy, A2DF, DJ Half Dutch, Jimmy The Hideous Penguin, Colm Kenefick, Colz, Stevie G & Pasta Masta thanks for your time and effort, without which this podcast wouldn’t be possible. To Neil Corcoran, thanks for the reviews and i’ll look forward to reading some more next year. And i almost forgot to thank my good friend Oscar Foran for the artwork and the photoshop tips. Now getting back on topic, i’m proud to present The Chop Shop Podcast Vol. 9 mixed by none other thans Red Fm’s Stevie G! …………………………………………

“This was my first mix in awhile and I had a lot of tunes to get out
my system, probably too much really! I only got about half of them
on so I’ll have to do a part 2 soon-This mix here includes a pretty
good variety of stuff, from funk and hip-hop to reggae and rock.
Soul and jazz run through most of the tunes, which I’ve pretty much
banged together as if it were a live gig.
I could easily have kept it to a smooth and slick 95bpm
hip-hop for the whole thing, but that’s what I was doing ten or
twelve years ago and I wanna play much broader now. That said the
mix kicks off with largely a hip-hop vibe, before proceeding to
some breaks and funk, and eventually on to some rock and Motown
stuff, via reggae and ska. As I said, there are bits of jazz all
along the way, from the early hip-hop prototype Last Poets stuff,
to the heavily jazz influenced stuff from a few of my favourite
modern soul singers, Amy Winehouse and Jill Scott. The jazz funk of
a Marvin Gaye classic gives way to Jazzy Jeff’s pioneering blend of
some of the best 70’s stuff, with “Mister Magic” sitting nicely on
a remix of Jurassic 5’s first single. Cannonball Adderley’s mighty
“Walk Tall” is another jazz classic, as are the two Blue Mitchell
efforts here, both sampled by great hip-hop tracks.
I’m a big reggae and soul fan too, and there’s
smatterings of both, though time restrictions meant these sections
are a bit rushed. Two of the best ever DJ orientated tracks are on
here too, the aforementioned Jazzy Jeff cut-up accompanied by the
still outstanding Cut Chemist remix of DJ Shadow’s classic, a
massive track for me back in the day. From a similar era I’ve
included MC Lyte and Nas, plus a contribution from one of the most
under-rated hip-hop crews of them all, Digable Planets. Modern big
hitters such as Jay Z, Common and Kanye more than merit their
inclusion, while my love for Dilla is evident on about 4 tracks,
the incredible Pharoahe Monch helping out on a track from “The
Shining”
As a teenager who listened to the Velvet Underground non
stop, I’m delighted to include the massive “Rock n’Roll”, a very
big track for me growing up. Van Morrison’s Them, Aretha Franklin,
The Stones, Booker T and Jackie Wilson are all there too, plus
Maceo & the Macks, James Brown and the Four Tops! Apologies if some
bits are a bit rushed, I would love to play the tracks in full, but
it is the Chop Shop after all. Happy Christmas!” – Stevie G

DJ Colz Presents The Chop Shop Podcast Vol.8

November 27th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Podcasts and written by Jay Ru

One of these day i’ll stick to my schedule and get these podcasts out at the right time……………….. Any ways folks we’re back at ya again and on this go round we’ve got Dublin’s own DJ Colz showing us that theres a hell of lot more to disco than John Travolta & “Staying Alive”. Hope you guys enjoy this as much as i have!

icon for podpress  Standard Podcast [65:44m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

“Well, yes, a disco mix. The tracks featured in this mix are all dancefloor classics of the 1970’s, mostly stomping four to the floor, but not always. When I was a kid, Disco meant a few things to me: my friends older sisters with their ‘Stars on 45′ LPs, Travolta posters and rollerskates at the local disco. Of course, this picture is as accurate as presuming Technotronic etc is ‘techno’ or that 50 Cent is ‘Hip Hop’… Pop music always robs the underground forms that have gone before, co-opts them, makes awful but hugely popular
pop songs, and leaves everyone so sick of the genre they can justifiably pray for the day the fad in question is resigned
to the recycle bin(the ‘disco sucks’ movement in the USA for example…)

However, as we know, 50 Cent is NOT Hip Hop, anymore than Technotronic were the sound of 80s detroit or Boney M
were Disco. To me, at its best, Disco music is the sound of jazz and funk musicians in the studio, making music for dancefloors, under the watchful eye of a producer who isnt afraid to experiment…and of course, then its many more hours of editing and mixing, under the influence of the dub styles emerging from Jamaica and the UK, and the beginnings of a new aesthetic in dance.

So, after the initial disclaimer, FIRST CHOICE ‘Let no man…’ is a three minute single extended by Larry Levan into a dancefloor monster with a bassline that reappeared a decade later(‘Jack Your Body’ by Steve Hurley)and has never left us… then its two of the late great Arthur Russell’s compositions ‘Is it all..’ and the wierd ‘Go Bang!’. Next the jazzy funk of ‘Delerium’ and the Bronx family ESG’s punky disco ‘Moody’, while AZOTO’s ‘San Salvador’ borrows heavily from Kraftwerks ‘Trans Europe Express’ to build its rolling drum break.

Next are two favourites of mine, TAMIKO JONES ‘Cant Live’ is an example of the way disco threw out the verse-chorus-verse-bridge of pop singles and made something else entirely, a repeating over and over that laid the foundations of House. ‘212 North’, another great edit from The Salsoul stable, and a Bronx favourite from the old school days, ‘Phenomena Theme’ with its highly sought drum breaks and big chant. ‘Get Up and Dance’ and ‘Shack Up’ should be familiar to everyone through the heavy use of their
drum breaks in pop music…next a Sly Stone project, LITTLE SISTER, into an unnamed disco edit, and then the sounds of Brazil(via Belgium!) from TWO MAN SOUND, and finishing with ATMOSFEAR from the UK, a perfect slice of disco dub.

I hope you find something in these records as I have over the years, its a bastard to mix live drummers!”

“Podcast time!!!!! Well first off my goal with this podcast was to try and be as varied as possible and as “across the board” as i would like. It begins with some heavy heavy detroit action bringing some brain twisting, highly addictive grooves to the table courtesy of Orestt. Following this is one of my fav’s from Dabrye, another detroit native. THis track just moves in a special way and it works a treat for the dark moody vibes preceeding it. Up next Mr. Sundance, a dutch native brings an emotional piece of “jazzy’nastyness”, proper!!. From here we tend to groove to some off kilter hip-hop flava’s courtesy of Maspyke, J Live and a monster, Tom Browne sampling, instrumental from the one and only Sa Ra creative partners on the Jazzy Sport label from Japan. Back to detroit with some dirty filth from Dilla associates Frank ‘n” Dank proceeded by one of my favourite grooves of the year – Paper Chaser, an old Weather Report groove updated in a “Beat Dimensions” fashion by Mr Tom Trago outta Amstrerdam. An oldie from De La produced by Rockwilder keeps things bouncing and then something i produced myself. A track i recorded with Ms Aisling Stephenson, originally from Cork, now resides in London. Extremely talented voice and this is just a taste of some other tracks i recorded with her over the last few months. This is just a demo mix and isnt a mastered finished version by any means. But enjoy and let me know what y’all think.. Retro vibes from Fat Larry’s Band, T Ski Valley and Freedom follow as well as an Ol Skool accapella from THe Go! Teams – Grip Like A Vice.. Then the monster!!! The Sexual Healing cover by the Hot 8 Brass Band on Tru Thoughts.. Killer Tune that works.. Keeping the funk alive i follow with The Haggis Horns, a real funk groove with some proper horns bizness. Great vocal too courtesy of Mr John Mc Callum..! Good aul Amy Winehouse follows with what i would consider one the better examples of modern soul.. Then things are a little heated with all that Amy Winehouse tackle and i decide to wind things down with one of my favourites – a cover of Lets Straighten It Out by OV Wright.. This song just weeps emotion and its a great tune to close this mix with..

Hope U Enjoy. Holla Back with some feedback?? And dont forget to check my myspace for some updates on forthcoming Hula Hoops and Original music over the next few months… www.myspace.com/colmkenefickmusic
