Stanton Release The SC System

February 29th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in DJ Technology and written by Jay Ru

What is the SC System?

The SC System is a controller system designed for DJing with computer software. The SC System is compromised of a mixer and deck controller which can be used as replacements for mixer and turntables currently found in setups around the world. These controllers speak industry standard MIDI messages so they can be hooked into any DJ software that accepts MIDI.

The SCS.1m is a perfect analogy to standard 4 channel DJ mixers so it can be used to control virtual mixers and FX while the SCS.1d is a direct comparison to a turntable / cd player hybrid with motorized platter, trigger pads, encoder section and motorized pitch fader.

Both components (SCS.1m and SCS.1d) are Firewire devices so they can be chained together and added upon for even more control and performance options. Firewire provides plug and play functionality on the Mac and screaming low latency audio.”

Came across this earlier and i thought it might be of some interest, from what i can gather it can be used with all the existing virtual djing software thats out from Traktor to Serato and everything in between. The system has already won the DJ Zone Crystal Disk Award this year at the 107th NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA. the Disk is awarded to those companys who advance the technical innovations of digital djing. Check the demo vid below

SCS.1m

“The worlds first premier mixer control surface, with built in firewire audio interface, assignable encoders and tight 2 way surface control”

SCS.1d

Flagship deck control surface with 10″ motorized platter, assignable encoder, trigger pads and superior tracking

Smirnoff Do Hip Hop & Ghostface Complains Bout His Fans!

February 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Hip Hop News, Music News & Downloads and written by Jay Ru

I stumbled across this lil give away on the Okay Player blog last night, seeming Smirnoff have teamed up with some of the biggest names in hip hop to like DJ Premier, Krs One, Q Tip, Just Blaze and Common to release The Smirnoff Signature Mix Series, which so far includes remakes of classic tunes such as Boogie Down Productions “Criminal Minds” produced by DJ Premier and then theres Just Blazes mix of one of my all time favorite Common tunes “The Light“. Check the site on the 03.04.08 for the Cool and Dre produced “Midnight 08″

Now for something else, came across this vid on another forum that i visit regularly, basically it Ghostface complaining bout the fact that he’s got x amount of fans on his myspace page but the sales of his latest album, The Big Doe Rehab, don’t come anywhere near the amount fans on the myspace page. It used to be said that any publicity is good publicity but i’m not sure if thats the case here!!!!!!!!!

American Gangster – The Remixes

February 19th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Music News & Downloads and written by Jay Ru

I don’t know how many of u have missed this, like i did, but i thought i might give this some blog space any way! Seems that back on the 4th of December last year Jigga and Def Jam decided to release an acapella version of his last album. You can just imagine all those bed room producers and a like around the world creaming there shorts at the news of this. I mean, remember what the last Jay-Z acapella album done for the career of a certain member of Gnarls Barkley! By now theres far to many of them to list so what i have done is chosen 3 of my favourites and supply this link to a hell of a lot more. Simply click the artwork for the download!

————————————————————————————————————————-

First up theres that guy who used to do all the production for Little Brother, 9th Wonder. Remember he done the first 2 album, the GOOD ones. Any ways this is bout what u’d expect from 9th, sweet soulful samples cut up like one he can. Stand out tracks for me include “American Wonder and Pray”——– edit——- thanks to Kev for pointing out that the link below is not for 9th Wonders remixes but its for Crazy Chris’,  Stevie Wonder inspired remixes! heres the link to 9th’s joint  i’ll leave Crazy Chris’ there to!

————————————————————————————————————————-

Next up we have Rob Viktums “American Donut Shop” and what Rob did here is he took not only beats from Dilla’s second last album but he went one step futher and sample the same tunes that the late Mr. Yancy sampled to make Donuts. I’ve been listening to this one for bout a week now and i can’t pick out one track, everything on this long player works. Thrust me when i say well worth the download!

————————————————————————————————————————-

Last but far from least we’ve got “Classic Gangster” presented by Jayswing and Flip Out, and what we’ve got here is one of the best blend albums around. My personal favorite has to be “Sweet” which is blended perfectly with Tribes classic “Can I Kick It” Hov’s flow sits perfectly over Ali Shaheed’s timeless production. Other stand out cuts include “Success” & “Ignorant Shit”

Now thats Young Hova!

Fruit Man presents The Chop Shop Podcast Vol.12

February 14th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Chop Shop News, Podcasts and written by Jay Ru

Yes indeed folks its that time of the month again, and we’re back with another skillful display on the 1 and 2’s. Before i get into that theres another podcast i’d like to let you guys know about, Chop Shop member Stevie G from Cork has set up his own podcast which features mixes from what seem to an endless collection, i guess its testament to G’s time in the DJ biz. Theres every kind of mix from Undergound Hip Hop to Party Shit to D&B to Down Tempo and everything in between, so please feel free to support one of Corks longest serving DJ’s here. And don’t worry Stevie has reassured me that he’ll still be dropping mixes for the Shop! Now getting back to the topic at hand, this is the 12th volume of our little podcast and this time round i’ve the pleasure of introducing first time Chop Shopper Fruit Man from the nations capital! Dudes a chess adict who just happen to have a serious jones for scratching records, his electic taste in music covers all thats good from the world of funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, electronic & afro beat. You may have heard Darren on Near FM helping out his good friend Paul Trimble, Fruit Man will also be starting his out show called Double Down which will kicking off in mid March, more details when i have em…………………………………………

Dublin based producer & DJ, The Fruitman, delivers his hand picked harvest for Edition 12 of The Chop Shop. Entitled “Comfort For A Trouble Mind” the mix features a great late night listening assortment with a varied pallet of Juicy tunes sliced ‘n’ diced with great precision & interjected with skilfully placed cuts & drops. Citing Gilles Peterson & Mr Scruff as influences it’s clear as to what pedigree of music we’re dealing with here but what sets him apart from his peers is an approach which is all his own & an abundance of skill. This bunch of tracks comes with no slim pickings & features soul staples such as Curtis Mayfield, Ann Peebles, Gwen McCrae ,here with her timeless “90% Of Me Is You” & the captivating bass of Aaron Neville’s mighty “Hercules”.

The Hip Hop crop are more of the conscious variety & come from steadfast artists such as People Under The Stairs, Slum Village, Edan & Jneiro Jarel’s creative entourage Shape Of Broad Minds here with the deep “Changes” fans of MF Doom may already be aware of this outfit
through previous collaborations. 3 tracks from Wu- Tang head honcho RZA are also incorporated & no discerning beat digger’s compilation
would be complete without acknowledgement to the enduring talent of J Dilla included here with his L.V. Johnson sampling “Airworks” which is preceded by the original from Johnson. Smoother laid back vibes come in the shape of the chilled Jazz/Funk of Bob James; the Funk/Hop of the Madlib produced “Beautiful Mind” by Dudley Perkins & Mandrill’s reflective “I refuse to smile”. With .Main Ingredient’s take on Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” & “Sunshower”, covered more recently by M.I.A,. & here in it’s original form by Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band also adding to the relaxed tone.

As always there’s more I could go into but too much information could distract from the listening pleasure. This is an excellently programmed set & one I strongly recommended you give a whirl & for more on The Fruitman check his Myspace page. The man from Del Monte “He say yes”

Review Of Vol.11 Mixed By A2DF

January 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Review and written by Jay Ru

A2df keeps the grooves rare & the funk deep with his second outing for
Jay Ru’s “Chop Shop”. Limericks “45 king” revisits much of the same
territory as he did for his first mix & if the current resurgence of
interest in all things of a soulful persuasion has caught your
attention & you’d like to investigate it’s origins then this as good a
place as any to begin.
A quick browse of the play list may not throw up many recognisable
names but be assured all artists here are of the calibre of the more
renowned figures of the era. The 25 tracks included here all come from
the halcyon period of funk & soul & are nicely programmed with a warm
& earthy vibe kept throughout

Sunrise Movement’s much sought after “Clockwise Revolution” is a
fitting opener to the first pod cast of ‘08. Its psychedelic funk
bears more than a passing resemblance to The Temptation’s “Ball of
Confusion” & serves as an arresting opener to the mix. Of the tracks
featured here noteworthy mention must go to, for starters, the Johnny
Otis’ produced & much sampled “Humpty Dump” by The Vibrettes a
breaktastic production topped off with the competent vocals of the
female outfit.

This is followed by an artist revered in hip hop, soul & even house
circles, Manzel, here with his sublime “Jump Street”
As used on The Ultramagnetic MC’s “Ain’t it good to you”. Those who
like their beats more around the 120 mark may also be aware of his
work through remixes by Masters at Work. This is a great blend of Wah
Wah guitar& Wurlitzer keys & has a nice laid back feel.

Long time James Brown collaborator Bobby Byrd features with 2
submissions. The generic “Funky Soul” is instantly forgettable with
the opposite being true of “Got to have a job” this is one of
‘Byrd’s’, who passed just last September, finest moments Also on the
roster is his widow & the mother of Carleen, Vikki Anderson.
The rotating member of ‘The Godfathers’ soul revue delivers a perfect
slice of funky soul with “Think”

Two other tracks which stand out for me are The Showmen’s “Vogolio
Restare Solo” which is an interesting mix of Rhythm & Blues & Italian
pop & Milly and The Arkets “Little Archie” which comes on like a
soulful version of “Louie Louie” by The Kingsmen. Personal highlights
coming in the shape of Irene Reid’s “I Must Be Doing Something Right”
a track that I’m sure any soul fan will be familiar with an
undisputable gem sung with great strength & conviction. A close second
goes to “Magic Corner” a sweet ode to dating by Billita Woods

The mix closes with Gerald Wilson Orchestra’s take on “Light My Fire”
this varies from other versions in that it has a slight big band feel
to it & wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a variety show at the
time. If this track tickles your fancy then check out his version of
the Ashford & Simpson penned “California Soul”

I thoroughly enjoyed this as I have done all the Chop Shop pod casts &
it’s sure to be getting repeated listens in the future. If like me
you’re partial to this style of soul & funk then I strongly recommend
you give the Amy Winehouse album a break, check this out & subscribe
now!
